Terms & Conditions

Last updated 2 August 2026

These terms set out the agreement between you and Green Coterie when you use our website. Please read them before creating an account — by signing up, you accept them.

1. Who we are

Green Coterie is a community website where gardeners and plant lovers give away, swap, sell and request plants, seeds, cuttings, tools and related items.

In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Green Coterie. “You” means the person using the site. You can reach us at hello@greencoterie.com.

2. Accounts and eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. You may hold only one account, and the details you give us — including your name and contact details — must be accurate and kept up to date.

You are responsible for keeping your password secret and for everything done through your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has access to it.

3. We provide the platform, not the items

Green Coterie is a place for members to find each other. We are not the seller, giver or buyer of anything listed, we do not inspect or handle items, and we are not a party to any arrangement you make with another member.

Any agreement to give, swap, sell or buy an item is between you and the other member directly. You are each responsible for agreeing the details, for the accuracy of what is described, and for the exchange itself.

4. Listing items

You may post two kinds of listing: an offer, for something you have, and a request, for something you are looking for.

Describe items honestly, including any pests, disease, damage or defects you know about. Use your own photographs, or photographs you have permission to use, and make sure they show the actual item.

You must have the right to give away, swap or sell anything you list, and it must be legal to supply it in the United Kingdom.

5. Free, Swap and Sell listings

Listings are tagged to show what the member is open to: Free, Swap, or Sell (shown as Buy on a request).

A price shown on a listing is set by the member, not by us. We do not take payment, hold funds, or handle refunds — payment and delivery are arranged directly between the two members.

If you sell items regularly or as a business, you are responsible for meeting the legal obligations that come with that, including consumer rights and tax. Consider whether you need to identify yourself as a trader.

6. Requests, reserving and handovers

When you request an item, the member who posted it can accept or decline. Accepting reserves the item and marks it as taken; it is not a binding contract of sale, and either of you may change your mind before the handover.

Arranging collection, postage or delivery is up to the two of you. Please take sensible precautions when meeting someone — choose a public place where you can, tell someone where you are going, and do not share more personal information than the exchange needs.

7. Messaging and conduct

Messages between members are for arranging exchanges and talking about plants. Be civil.

You must not use messaging to send unsolicited advertising, chain messages or scams, to harass, threaten or abuse anyone, or to collect other members’ personal details for any other purpose.

We may review messages that are reported to us so that we can investigate a complaint or a breach of these terms.

8. Content you upload

You keep ownership of the photographs and text you upload. By posting them, you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, resize and display that content for the purpose of running and promoting the site.

You confirm that your content is yours to post and that it does not infringe anyone else’s rights. We may remove content that breaches these terms.

9. Things you must not list or do

You must not use Green Coterie to list, request or supply:

  • plants, seeds or organisms whose sale, supply or release is restricted or prohibited in the UK, including invasive non-native species
  • anything you know to be diseased or infested, without saying so clearly
  • endangered or protected species, or anything taken from the wild unlawfully
  • stolen goods, counterfeits, or anything you do not have the right to supply
  • weapons, drugs, live animals, or anything else unlawful to supply

10. More things you must not do

  • impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your connection to a person or organisation
  • post false, misleading or deliberately duplicated listings
  • scrape, copy or bulk-collect content or member details from the site
  • interfere with the site’s operation, security or availability, or try to gain access you have not been given

11. Suspending or closing accounts

We may remove a listing, restrict features, or suspend or close an account if we reasonably believe these terms have been broken, or to protect other members or the site. Where it is practical and appropriate to do so, we will tell you why.

You can close your account at any time from your profile, or by contacting us. Closing your account does not affect any arrangement you have already made with another member.

12. Our responsibility to you

We provide the site with reasonable care and skill, but we do not promise that it will always be available or free of faults, or that listings are accurate, lawful or safe.

We are not responsible for the conduct of other members, for the condition, quality, safety or legality of anything listed, or for any arrangement that falls through.

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Subject to that, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of opportunity, or any indirect or consequential loss.

If you use the site as a consumer, you keep all the rights the law gives you as a consumer.

13. Your personal data

We handle your personal data in line with our Privacy Policy, which explains what we collect, why, and what rights you have over it.

Note that some information you enter is shown to other members — your name, your listings, the images you upload, and any contact details or postcode you choose to add to a listing.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site changes. When we make a significant change we will bring it to your attention, and the date at the top of this page will always show when it was last updated.

If you keep using the site after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms.

15. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you may bring proceedings in your own jurisdiction.

If you have a complaint, please contact us first at hello@greencoterie.com — we would much rather sort it out with you directly.
